Isn't 80% enough to pass the CCNA exam?

Jun 23rd, 2007

It was my understanding that 80% was a passing mark. I just got an 834 out of 1000 and it said "fail". What gives?

dear

its not 80% but only 76% is required

it works like this

849 is minimum score required to pass

so (849-300)/(1000-300) = 76

hope it clear ur doubt

but i feel sorry for ur result good luck next time

Remember that different questions have different weightings and some questions may not even count towards your score at all.

If the pass grade is 84.9% then I wouldn't count yourself as passing until you've beaten this despite the suggested 30% gimme.

No doubt the CCNA is a tricky one.

There is no "suggested 30% gimme", you're mistaking 300 minimum for 30%, this is not the right calculation.

300 minimum means 0%. If you get no right answer you would have a 0% score and a 300 absolute score.

849 means around 76%, whereas 1000 of course means 100% success.

Hope it becomes clear now. If it is still confusing for you, use the following formula:

((ABSOLUTE SCORE - 300) / (1000 - 300)) * 100 = PERCENTAGE

There is very much a suggested gimme. 30% gross percent is the same as the 300 minimum. I agree that 300 minimum is not the same as 30% net of calculation.

However my point is that whilst technically you may only need 76% of the points because the starting point is 300; you cannot look at it this way because of the weighting.

76% of the points allocation may be achieved by answering only 50% of the questions correctly.

From the point of view of the test taker the maths doesn't matter, hence my suggestion of aiming for the actual pass grade of 849 in any revision materials.

I hope that makes sense.

its not 76 but 78.5 %

849-300 / 1000-300=549 / 700 = 74.5%

hope that its help

Does it even matter about what percentage is right and the logic behind the 300 point lowest score? All that you really need to worry about is that you need 849 points to pass. Look at your score report and focus on your weak areas so you can pass the next time.
