Hi,

Anyone knows why Cisco ships 7961G-GE IP phones with Category 5 cables as Cat5 isnt compatible for 1000BASE-T...

Can we request Cisco to ship GE phones with Category 6 or minimum 5e cables?

:)

Hello,

Actually 1000 base T was designed for category 5 cabling and works on category 5 cabling.

If you cabling exceed cat 5, good, but is it NOT a requirement.

Worry not, it won't be a 1.5 m patch, whatever category it is, to give trouble to your network.

Hope thos helps, please rate post if it does!

I found this from a website about Category 5.

Maybe Cisco would take this as a feedback to upgrade their cables. :)

The original specification for category 5 cable was defined in ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A, with clarification in TSB-95. These documents specified performance characteristics and test requirements for frequencies of up to 100 MHz.

Hi,

Despite any adverse claim, gigabit ethernet works fine over category 5 cabling. why is that, read in the following article:

The cat 5e, is a recommendation, not a strict requirement.

The same answer you can find on another variety of sources, wikipedia, etc.

This is not to defend cisco, but when it comes to networking, most of the time they know what they are doing :)

Thanks man.

I guess in terms of technology it would work. but for my corporate standard, cat 5 is not an option. :(

So I have to purchase either new cat 5e or cat 6 for the ip phones and the default ones have to go to waste. :((

Thanks for your help.

I guess there isn't anything we can do bout it.
