VG224 connected Analog DLU requirements?

I have a customer who has an old existing phone system. They are interested in going to CallManager 5.x. They want about 35 IP phones, and want to retain their 150 remaining single line analog phones.

THE DLU calculator has values for CallManager needed licenses for the IP phones, but shows the Analog phone licenses needed as 0.

The roughly 150 analog phones will be connected using a series of VG224s. Surely it's not correct that 180 people could be using a phone system, but the only Device Licensing requirements are for the 35 IP phones.

Does anyone know what if any Device Licensing units need purchased for an old single line analog phone?

The story goes that the VG248 and the VG224 do not consume licenses.

You'll want to check with your local account team for confirmation, but that's the jist of it.

You don't need any DLU for analog device. Good news for you.

Hi Tyler,

Just to add a note to Lelio and JP's great info.This question has come up a couple of times here with the answer being no the VG's do not consume DLU's. I have yet to see this in any Cisco documentation though. If you read between the lines it would seem that this is the correct answer;

Here is an excellent doc that shows the DLU's for all IP Phones (no mention of VG's);

Licensing

Application and phone software licenses are enforced. The system manages the maximum number of devices that can be provisioned.

Each device (Cisco Unified IP phones, third-party devices, and video devices) provisioned in the system corresponds to a number of device license units (DLUs), depending on its capabilities; the total number of units is managed in Cisco Unified CallManager to determine capacity.

DLUs must be purchased to cover the number of devices connected to Cisco Unified CallManager.

Third-party SIP devices require DLUs for operation with Cisco Unified CallManager.

It indicates that no DLU's are required :)

It doesn't help that you get conflicting information regarding licencing like that which you find in the SCCP Controlled Analog (FXS) Ports with Supplementary Features in Cisco IOS Gateways document below:

Specifically, it states:

Each FXS port that has SCCP enabled counts as a single IP phone for licensing purposes. For example, if you register all 24 ports on a Cisco VG 224:

- For Cisco Unified CME, you need to purchase at least an FL-CCME-SMALL license.

- For Cisco Unified Communications Manager, the 24 ports count towards the 2500 limit if you purchase LIC-CCM-4.X-2500.
