Can't fax with VG224

Unanswered Question
Jun 28th, 2007

I'd like to set up VG224 to support analog phones, modems, and fax machines with extensions on DID blocks. I've followed Cisco's SCCP Controlled Analog (FXS) Ports doc, and have successfully configured a voice port for an analog phone. However, the same config doesn't work when attaching fax machine. Fax machines generally transmit/receive faxes to/from external parties, not over IP WAN.

Recent posts recommend MGCP over SCCP but suggested configs may not work in my environment. I have a PRI terminating on a Catalyst WS-X6608-T1 module. CallManager 4.1(3)SR4d in single cluster, VG224 running 12.4(2)T5, configured in CCM as SCCP gateway with all 24 endpoints as analog phones.

I have this problem too.

Here is a note from the Restrictions section of SCCP notes:

?Modem and fax-relay are not supported on FXS ports with SCCP enabled; only modem and fax pass-through are supported. Configure FXS ports with either fax or modems attached in H.323 or SIP mode.

I think on the 6608, you enable fax passthrough by unchecking the fax relay box. This would be your best hope, and hope that the passthrough on the VG224 and the 6608 are the same flavor..

Found this in the SRND:

At a high level, Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1) - Load 47 on the Cisco 6608 and Load 41 on the Cisco 6624 - and Release 1.2.1 on the VG248 do support interoperability of Cisco fax relay, modem pass-through, and voice features. Prior to Cisco IOS Release 12.2(11)T1, only voice and Cisco fax relay were supported between Cisco IOS and non-IOS voice platforms because incompatibility of the pass-through Named Service Event (NSE) scheme prevented modem pass-through from interoperating

So, it might be that you want to check the load on the 6608, and make sure you have a newer load, for the best hope of success..
