What's different Between NAT and Static

Hello,

Can anyone tell me what is differnet between NAT and Static in Cisco ASA, if i configure Global to use range of IP addresses it will be like configring Static so what is the differnece? and is it possible to access internet with Static only without configuring NAT.

Hi

In Cisco ASA you define Nat and Static to translate addresses ,the difference between Nat and Static command is when you configure Nat you can do dynamic or Pat (port address translation) or do nat based on some rule you define with access lists but with static command (static nat) you just translated one Local address to one Global address,one to one.

just like when you define nat in Cisco routers and use (ip nat source list xxx ...) and (ip nat source static a.b.c.d a1.b1.c1.d1),in first issue as you can see it is dynamic nat but in next it is static nat.

Thanks for the reply, plz see the following configuration:

nat (inside) 1 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0

global (outside) 1 77.77.77.1-77.77.77.255 255.255.255.0

static (inside,outside) 77.77.77.0 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0

this is the same, so is it possible to access the internet with static only and remove the nat config

Yes they are same ,and with the second command you can access to internet.
