I've seen quite a few recommendations for Kiwi on Windows (http://www.kiwisyslog.com/). I'm not a Linux user, but on FreeBSD, the default syslogd works very well. I know some people using syslog-ng (http://www.balabit.com/products/syslog-ng/) on both FreeBSD and Solaris. It handles all device syslog messages just fine, and will also work on Linux.

Thanks Joe,

I'm not sure there is one true default syslogd for Linux. FreeBSD is a complete operating system, so it includes its own syslogd. With Linux, you have numerous distributions that each do their own thing. To play it safe, syslog-ng is a syslog daemon that works on a variety of UNIX operating systems.
