Solved: Upgrading Problem (Catalyst 2960)

I have a Catalyst 2960 and here is the contents of flash:

Directory of flash:/

2 -rwx 5 Mar 7 1993 02:37:34 +00:00 private-config.text

4 -rwx 2155 Mar 7 1993 02:37:34 +00:00 config.text

5 drwx 192 Mar 1 1993 00:07:11 +00:00 c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2

32514048 bytes total (24801792 bytes free)

My problem is that I cant back up this image to my TFTP server as it is showing the IOS as a directory and not a .bin file.

This leaves me with having to upgrade via SDM and hoping it sorts the upgrading out for me. I will be doing this later this afternoon.

If it upgrades file through SDM it still leaves me wondering why I couldnt back up the IOS.

Can any experts shed some light on this for me?

use the following commands to take backup of IOS ...

Use the archive upload-sw privileged EXEC command to upload an existing switch image to a server.

archive upload-sw [/version version_string] destination-url

Usage Guidelines

Use the upload feature only if the HTML files associated with the embedded device manager have been installed with the existing image.

The files are uploaded in this sequence: the Cisco IOS image, the HTML files, and info. After these files are uploaded, the software creates the tar file.

Image names are case sensitive.

Examples

This example shows how to upload the currently running image to a TFTP server at 172.20.140.2:

Switch# archive upload-sw tftp://172.20.140.2/test-image.tar

Note :you can follow the procedure mentioned below by Narayan...

First enter into directory using

# cd c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2

if type "sh flah" you find image with .bin extension...

# copy flash:c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2.bin tftp:

following is the output taken from my switch..

RTRA#cd c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE3

RTRA#sh flash:

Directory of flash:/c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE3/

7 drwx 4480 Mar 1 1993 00:05:08 +00:00 html

619 -rwx 4671175 Mar 1 1993 00:06:34 +00:00 c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SE

E3.bin

You can get into the directory to copy the file

type cd c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2

This takes you to the directory where the file is present

after this use the general command

copy c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2.bin tftp

You can backup the IOS, but since the image is from TAR you have the directory, and you are able to do more automatic IOS updates.

The most important is BIN. Do the following:

#dir flash:/c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2

it will display the contents of directory. look for bin, it will be named as directory, but with .bin at the end.

copy flash:/c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2/c2960-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEE2.bin tftp

Thanks for your help. I now have the image and tar backed up for my peace of mind.

I will upgrade through the SDM but to upgrade via CLI is it the "archive download-sw" command?

If you will download TAR from cisco, than you can use

"archive download-sw" or "archive download-sw /overwrite" (second commands deletes the previous image, including directory, and copies a new one and then decompresses it, including directories)

If you download BIN from cisco, than use just "copy tftp flash", and delete the previous directory manually.

And don't forget to change (config)#boot system when you are doing it manually, and then check it with "show boot".
