The Lwapp APs must be able to communicate with the WLC via UDP ports 12222 and 12223 whether they are on the same subnet or not.

No. The management interface can reside in its own vlan.

One example:

service interface on WLC in same vlan as WCS

WLC management interface & ap-management interface in same vlan.

WLC connected to switch infrastructure via trunks.

LWAPP APs in same vlan as WLC ap-management vlan

O.K , But if WLC in subnet and LWAPs in different subnet , should WLC in native VLAN
