I recently upgraded a Cisco2801 router from c2801-adventerprisek9-mz-124-3
to c2801-adventerprisek9-mz.124-16
the router has a Flash of 64MB. i deleted the old IOS befor i uploaded the new once ( cause there wasnt any space left.) the flash is now almost half empty
when i reload the router it takes a while but it loads properly, however if you take a look at the text capture from console 9while start up) it does give an error:
%SYS-3-IMAGE_TOO_BIG: 'flash:c2801-adventerprisek9-mz.124-16.bin' is too large for available memory (30464864 bytes).
%SYS-6-READ_BOOTFILE_FAIL: flash:c2801-adventerprisek9-mz.124-16.bin File read failed -- Not enough space.
%SYS-6-BOOT_MESSAGES: Messages above this line are from the boot loader.
looks liek its reloading twice
can anyone help ??
if you notice the top few lines it says
System Bootstrap, Version 12.3(8r)T8, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
is it the cause ???

This is pretty strange. The output that you attached does seem to show it booting once, allocating memory, and then declaring that there is not enough memory - when obviously there is enough memory. It seems to believe that it has only about 30 MB which is obviously incorrect. Then it boots again, allocates memory slightly differently, and boots successfully.
The good news is that it does boot the correct image properly. Is this a consistent behavior? If so I would suggest opening a case with TAC.

I think Rick is right, the router does not have sufficient DRAM, reboots to reallocate memory and manages to boot properly. 128 MB RAM is minimum for this IOS release, so you may want to add some more memory.
The other thing you may want to check out is the bootflash version, you're supposed to keep that the same as the IOS version.

Try formatting the flash and load the IOS again.
What is the DRAM in your router
The bootstrap version is not a problem. I recently did an upgrade for my 2811 to the 12.4(16) with bootstrap 12.3(8r) and is running fine. My DRAM however is 256MB

The router stores the operating system in a compressed format and extracts the executable at each boot (self extracting image ####). The IOS is then executed from DRAM from the error message above you don't have sufficient DRAM, I would suggest that you add at least another 128 mb of DRAM.

how do i find out the DRAM value ??

Hi ,
DRAM size is 117760K + 13312K , in which 13312 K is allotted for IO mem which is default....
flash is :62720K bytes
erase the flash first and try to load the image once again...better download the image from cisco once again...
cheers :)

i tried that as well .. but still gettingt he same error...
isnt that DRAM enuf for this ios ?????
07-13-2007 02:59 AM
Hi ,
Yes that DRAM is enough for loading present image ..following are the deatils ...
c2801-advipservicesk9-mz.124-15.T
c2801-advipservicesk9-mz.124-16
c2801-advipservicesk9-mz.123-11.YK2
c2801-advipservicesk9-mz.123-11.XL1
c2801-advipservicesk9-mz.123-14.T7
Above images need DRAM of 128 Mb min. and flash of 64 Mb Min...
hope it helps..
after erasing flash check the available space in flash....
can you paste show flash after issuing command "earse flash "
Cheers :)
