using CME(remote location) with a CCM(local)

Does CME act as a normal CCM? or do we need to manually make dial peer, and destination patterns on the gateway router connected to the CCM pointing those numbers to the corresponding phone IPs off of the CME router? I'm not great with voice but could someone give a brief explanation of how these are set up?

or possibly if we have a distant site pulling configs for IP phones off of a local CCM will that shoot a huge amount of overhead over the link?

It depends on what are you trying to setup?

You can have remote site phones registered with CallManager, and use the local GW as a SRST. So, when the WAN connection goes down the phones register locally with basic features.

With recent IOS version Cisco allows you to configure SRST with CME feature, so when the connection to CM is lost the phones register with local CME router.

To configure SRST with or without CME feaure set you need to configure it with required commands.
