Is 8msec rtt acceptible for this connection?

I just turned up a 1 gig ethernet fiber connection across our state - a distance of 250 miles. Each end is terminated on a 7604 with Sup720-3B and 7600-SIP-400. The carrier says this connection goes through 2 OC48s.

With nothing loading down this new link, there is an 8ms RTT when doing pings.

ROC-RT7604A-CR#ping 149.88.239.227

Type escape sequence to abort.

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 149.88.239.227, timeout is 2 seconds:

!!!!!

Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 8/8/8 ms

ROC-RT7604A-CR#

Is this acceptible? 8ms seems high for a gig fiber link

Its probably ok , you have to remember that a router puts ping at the low end of the priority poll and it will always look longer than it is , to get a more accurate picture ping thru the router on the far end to a known device other than the router.
