Network stretching

My organization is moving to MPLS and I wanted to find out more about stretching a subnet from one location to another for disaster recovery. I was told that this can be done with MPLS, basically I need to connect the subnet to pass replication as well as heartbeat traffic. I am talking about from NY to LA. Can this be done and how would I accomplish it?

You can consider MPLS layer 2 circuit between the 2 locations.

But this is no different than having a private line between them. So its not only possible with MPLS.

I think what you are looking for is VPLS you can read about it here http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6648/products_ios_protocol_option_home.html

In the simplest terms it can be used to extend LAN segments between 2 or more sites.

Hi,

If you need just an "emulated Cat5 cable" connecting the two sites, Ethernet over MPLS will be a solution you should consider. VPLS is much more complex and also has hardware restrictions not found for EoMPLS. As Swaroop pointed out other solutions exist as well. You can also use L2TPv3 to achieve the same in an IP only environment.
