how do I remove the static DHCP assignment that came on my brand new Cisco 7960 phone?

You need to unlock the settings,
a. Hit Settings
b. Hit **#
c. Settings will unlock, Go to Network Configuration.
d. Go to Option 33 (if i remember right).
e. Select option 33 Erase Network Config.
f. Press save soft key after you erase.

I don't understand why Cisco would preload any static settings on a new phone. Poor form!

I guess they test it in factory environment and get some IP via DHCP. Thats my best guess.
