We chose the Cisco 1800 Series routers as an entry point to scale our VPN solution. This much needed upgrade was a business decision to provide scalable, secure VPN tunnels over IPSEC with GRE between remote offices connected via high-speed public networks. We since modified the solution to include Wireless WAN connectivity with Cisco's wireless Aironet cards and have been pleased with the results. This simple, though moderately complex network solution was a much needed network improvement. We remove several network routers provided by third party companies and reduced our overhead costs. The Cisco 1841 offers two WIC expansion slots for modularity. In addition this router includes a 32MB compact flash card slot for saving and deploying configurations and IOS images. There is an additional memory expansion slot inside the router which is necessary when adding wireless WAN connectivity. Deploying the router was easy as well. The router includes the new http interface for configuration and design. Though you can completely customize the router using CISCO IOS commands, we love the built in security of the web module. The web module also includes reporting tools for network statistics and intrusion analysis. One could choose this router to also deploy point to point configurations using a T1 WIC. The only drawback is the limitation on supporting VWIC interfaces (you would need to upgrade to a 2800 series router to fully support voice). SOHOs will love the security and scalability the 1800 series routers provide. We are pleased with the value in the 1800 series routers for simple network design and scalability.
