Aironet 1220B -- No Image File, Cannot Update

I recently got my hands on an Aironet 1220B that has been converted from VxWorks to IOS. I also have the G upgrade kit waiting for install.

As it stands right now, when I power the device it goes to an AP: prompt. While watching it boot over console it says there is no image file present. However, the latest IOS is in the XMODEM directory, but it says I don't have permission to access it.

I've tried to tftp the update to the device. It'll let me tftp_init, I try to tar -xtract tftp://etc. and it times out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Charles,

Sounds like a TFTP problem for sure :(

Have a look at the details in the following threads that all have to do with TFTP. There are some great hints for troubleshooting TFTP problems from some of my favourite NetPros like ScottMac,Stephen from Cisco and Jack Young. The likely culprit may be that you need to uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" on your TFTP server;

Maybe try this (highly recommended version)

Solar Winds tftp

The problem could be that the Laptop (used for TFTP) Operating System is hiding the known file type. From Internet Explorer, go into Tools > Folder Options > View, scroll down until you find the parameter Hide extensions for known file types, and uncheck the box. This should eliminate the issue.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

I know it's taken a while to respond, but I have very little time to tinker with my toys!

I was able to get everything back up and running today. I ended up switching from TFTPD32 to Solar Winds. I did have to uncheck "Hide extensions for known types," and set my laptops IP to 10.0.0.2. After a reboot of my laptop & AP everything fell into place.

As soon as I recovered the Aironet 1200 I threw the G Radio in it. It came online and, after configuring everything, latched onto my home network.

After getting my 2621XM online I'm going to see what I can do with a Aironet 350 that I rescued from the trash...

Hi Charles,

No worries, I know that life is busy :) Glad to hear that you got this up and running. Good troubleshooting! Let us know if you have any other issues.

Best of luck,

Rob
