I passed my CCNA back in 2001, well over 3 years ago. I'd like to continue to CCNP but i just want to clarify that i can recertify my CCNA buy taking a 642 exam (i.e. CCNP) and i'll be up to date for another 3 years with CCNA and CCNP

No Sir, you cannot.

Once your certification has expired, it ceases to exist in any form or fashion. You cannot renew what does not exist (as far as Cisco is concerned).

If you had passed the "642-" exam before your CCNA expired, then your CCNA would have been renewed.

You can continue to do the tests in any order you'd like, but in order for you to become a CCNP (CCxP), you will have to take the CCNA exam(s) and pass; a valid CCNA is required as a pre-requisite to the CCNP.

Good Luck
