Hi Brian

You need to upgrade the license key. You can apply for the license key on the Cisco site and when you get e-mailed the new key there will be instructions on how to update the key. It is free.

From the Cisco Q&A on the ASA

Q. Can a Cisco ASA 5500 Series Edition bundle that is unrestricted (K8 bundle) with base encryption be upgraded to support strong encryption (K9 bundle)?

A. Yes. A bundle with base encryption can be upgraded to support strong 3DES/AES encryption at: This upgrade is available to customers at zero cost.

Even if your asa says K8, it might actually be K9. To know for sure, do a 'show version' and see if 3des/aes are enabled.
