Native vlan

I don't quite understand this concept.

i mean i read in a book that if i have some pc's connected to a switch, and i want to connect some ip-phones too - i need native vlan because pc's cannot understand vlan and tagging. that's fine but ISL encapsulation doesn't have any similar concept as native vlan so is this scenario wont work with ISL?

If you want to use native VLAN dot1q encapsulation should be used.

Somehow if you want to connect to a PC with ISL encapsulation you can configure relevant switchport as access.

No native VLAN available in ISL trunks.

but those ip-phones need trunking, they cannot be under access port.(the pc is connected to the phone)

You are correct, ISL can't be used on this type of configuration. In reality, ISL is being used less and less on new implementations and if you are dealing with Cisco 6500 and 4500 switches, you will find some modules do not support ISL - just 802.1q
