ASA performance issues

HI,

Is there any way to increase ASA throughput. We were conducting tests using bbcp (large file transfer program) between two solaris boxes. When these boxes were connected together (the whole network infrastructure has gig interfaces) either through the 3560 gig switch or with cross overs ,we could get transfer rates of 700-800 Mbps. When we connect one of the machines through a spare port in the firewall and do the transfer through the firewall , we get transfer rates of only 170Mbps.

Any idea why? the firewall is an ASA5520

Hi,

The 5520 doesn't support Gigabit throughput, the maximum according to the datasheet is 450Mbps but the following Miercom report shows in reality it's somewhat less:

http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/products/ps6120/c1244/cdccont_0900aecd80350d4e.pdf

If you need gigabit throughput then something like the ASA5550 would be more suitable.

Andrew.

Thanks for that Andrew. A few window size changes increased the throughput close to cscos values.Does anyone know if the ASA5520 supports jumbo frames? A lot of googling didnt thow up any results.

Hello,

You can use MPF to give traffic priority, but generally, this is an sign that indicates that duplex and speed are wrong.

View the logs of your system.

Regards.
