Hello

Its my first time to upgrade 6500 multilayer switches. My big question is what i pay attention for upgrading this devices. The switches serve sverals modules. I will upgrade to s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF10.bin currently:s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF6.bin

Here the output from the modules:

You have a 512M Sup-Bootdisk. That's large enough to keep both levels of code in there. I'd first delete the s72033-ipservices_wan-mz.122-18.SXF5.bin file with this command:

del sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservices_wan-mz.122-18.SXF5.bin

Confim the delete. You do not need to squeeze the sup-bootdisk. This will free up some room, and it's good house cleaning.

Download the FPD file from Cisco and ftp copy (or tftp) the FPD file to your sup-bootdisk in the same manner as you load the IOS file.

You are going to want both of these files (the IOS and the FPD) in the sup-bootdisk. Use the copy command to do that:

copy disk0:s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF10.bin sup-bootdisk:

Keep the name the same. In the end, you will have the: s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF6.bin, s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF10.bin, and the c7600-fpd-pkg.122-18.SXF10.pkg files on your sup-bootdisk. This will be the best way for you in the event you need to drop back to the old version. Prove this with the: dir sup-bootdisk: command.

Make sure before you boot and perform the upgrade you have the following command in your config: boot system sup-bootdisk:s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF10.bin

This will force the system to boot this file and not the older file.

Your old FPD code is in the flexwan-fdp: directory. My guess would be you upgraded from a FLexWAN carrier to the SPA sometime in the past. The process I've shown you will make you as current as possible.

If you run into problems and need to drop back a version, interrupt the boot process of the switch and get to ROMMON. Type UNSET BOOT (must be caps). Then do a: dir sup-bootflash:. Make sure your old version is there. Then type: boot sup-bootdisk:s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF6.bin

You should boot to the old version. Correct any errors and try again. You may have made a mistake in the name in the boot system command.

Hope I have been helpful to you.

Ciao

What is the reason for upgrade?

Normally, stable prodcution systems should have a good reason for upgrades.

I.E. a bug that REALLY could destabilize environment, new functionality that REALLY could/will be used, security hole that REALLY could be exploited, etc.

hi

i see several bugs in the bug toolkit...but not so really dramatic.

however when i make an update, what are the importants steps with several modules?

I see you have a SPA-400. These are field programmable devices. Therefore, you will need to upgrade this file as well. You'll need filename c7600-fpd-pkg.122-18.SXF10.pkg as well in your sup-bootdisk. It's best to keep these files (the IOS and the FPD) on the same revision if available.

Also, make sure the following commands are in your configuration:

upgrade fpd auto

upgrade fpd path sup-bootdisk:

This will force the file to load at next boot. It will perform the upgrade automagically.

It really is simpler than you might believe. Just have the IOS and the FPD files on the sup-bootdisk, update your BOOT SYSTEM command to point to the new IOS file and reload. As you only have a single SUP, it will be an intrusive upgrade.

I would keep the old software on a seperate CF card. This way, if you have an issue with the new software, you can always get to ROMMON and boot the file from that card. Just remember to UNSET any BOOT command if you need to do this.

hello,

many thanks for your answer. its possible load the image and fpd from a disk flash system?

other question: how does i find (command) the fpd package in our system?
