I have configured a small lab network with 2 switches and 1 router. The configuration is as follows:
SW1: VLAN1: Default IP:172.168.10.2
VLAN2: name IT ? Ports 2,4,6
VLAN3: name Accnt ? Ports 3,5,7
VLAN4: name HR ? Ports 15,17,19
Default Gateway: 172.168.10.1
VTP role: Server
VTP Domain: zzz
SW2: Default IP 172.168.10.3
Default Gateway: 172.168.10.1
VLAN2: name IT ? Ports 2,4,6
VLAN3: name Accnt ? Ports 3,5,7
VLAN4: name HR ? Ports 15,17,19
Default Gateway: 172.168.10.1
VTP role: Client
VTP Domain: zzz
RT1: F0/0.1 : 172.168.10.1 dotq 1
F0/0.2: 172.168.20.1 dotq 2
F0/0.3: 172.168.30.1 dotq 3
F0/0.4: 172.168.40.1 dotq 4
The issues that I am having is that when I configure a client which plugged into port 2 on either SW1 or SW2 with the 172.168.20.50 and default gateway of 172.168.10.1, the client can?t ping the router. Can someone take a look at this configuration and let me know if I missed something? What IP subnet configuration should I be using for the clients on each VLAN?
Thanks in advance,
sK

Your address of 172.168.20.50 can't have a gateway in the 172.168.10 space it would be the router address doing the routing for addres 172.168.20.X subnet

I tried 172.168.20.1 as a default gateway for the client; however, that didn't work either. How should I correct this?
Thanks,

Hi Sk
Your client needs it's default gateway to be set to 172.168.20.1 which is the routed interface for vlan 2.

I will try that again.
Thanks Jon!

Hi,
As the previous posters have suggested. The default gateway address configured on the clients should be the IP address for the corresponding vlan interface from the router. i.s 192.168.20.1 for Vlan 2 and so on.
One more thing you should check is, which model of switches are they, if they are 2950 series, then they only support dot1Q so you are ok but if they are 2900 series then you may need to use ISL instead of Dot1Q on the router interfaces.
Hope This Helps

The problem was with the uplink port in SW1 not being trunked with the router's Fa0/0 interface! It is all good now.
One thing that is still puzzling me, though, is that when I use 172.168.10.1 or 172.168.20.1 as the default gateway on the client station, it is able to ping the router just fine!!!
Here is the ip used on client's station which was able to ping both the router and the other station on connected to SW2 within the same VLAN
Station1- IP:172.168.20.50 VALN2
Sub:255.255.255.0
DG: 172.168.10.1 or 172.168.20.1
Station2- IP:172.168.20.51 VLAN2
Sub:255.255.255.0
DG: 172.168.10.1 or 172.168.20.1
Thanks,
sK
