general question - packets in and out on an interface

Hi, when you're looking at interface stats for any serial or ethernet interface, and the interface keeps the count of ingoing & outgoing packets... are packets generated by the router itself - eg snmp & lmi - counted in the outgoing packet count?

Thanks....

Hi Lisa

As far as i know yes it would include these as the output packet count is the actual count of the packets transmitted on that interface and obviously routing

updates/HSRP/snmp/lmi etc. would be included in that count.

Lisa,

The output packet count includes all traffic generated by the router as well and it's not just the traffic switched from other interface(s).

Thanks everyone. That is very helpful.
