Given that Catalyst 2950 switches support only 802.1q VLAN trunking, and Catalyst 1900 switches support only ISL VLAN trunking, can VLAN's be successfully used on a LAN which contains both of these switch types ?

Hi Friend,
There is a problem here, you can configure vlans on both the switches but because both support different encapsulation type , trunk will not come up and traffic for those vlans will not pass other switch.

You can't connect directly 2950 with 1900 using trunk because 2950 supports only dot1q, while 1900 supports only ISL.
You could place a switch that supports both encapsulations between 2950 and 1900. For example 2900XL-A/-EN, 3500XL, 3550, 3560, 3750...
