Factory Default Reset of Cisco 1841

I have a Cisco 1841 and I am not able to launch the SDM. It was working previously but stopped after we were trying some configuration. How can I reset the router to factory defaults using Hardware/Console?

Hello there,

If you have console access to the router, you can clear the configuration and go back to factory defaults using the "write erase" command. You will need to be in enabled mode in order to do this, so you must know both the login and enable passwords.

Note that this will clear your whole configuration, so if you aren't sure, you may want to back up to a TFTP server (if you have one) by using "copy run tftp" before clearing the configuration.

Graeme has given the traditional answer about how to reset to factory default. But I think that we need to be careful in understanding what is meant by factory default. Using write erase will remove the startup-config and when the router boots it will have an empty config - and this is what used to be the factory default. However in your case I suspect that your version of factory default is the way that it came from the factory and that included a config that initiated SDM, supplied a default address for the LAN interface, and configured userID to allow initial login to SDM. Write erase will not get you to that point.

I have not had to do it so I can not speak from experience about how to restore SDM. I believe that in flash there is a file that includes the initial config. If you can find that file and copy it to startup-config then I believe that you will get what you want.

Anyone who has actually done the restore of SDM should feel free to chime in here.

when you do a wr erase you will lose all the SDM configurations upon reboot. i have always done this but never tried to restore the SDM again. Need to check by testing the same :-)

Sorry - SDM isn't something I've really done much with, so take my advice here with a pinch of salt.

Hi,

If you have lost the SDM files you'll have to download them:

And review this step:

Afterwards please make sure you have the following configuration on your router:

Router(config)# ip http server

Router(config)# ip http authentication local

Router(config)# ip http secure-server

Router(config)# username username privilege 15 secret 0 password

You will use this username and password to log in to SDM.
