Unity 3.1(6) without MS Exchange

We used Unity 3.1(6) with Exchange 2000. Recently we upgrade to Exchange 2007. I configure Unity to consider MS Exchange as down. Now MWI doesn't work anymore and we can only listen messsages but don't delete... Is it possible to configure Unity to don't use Exchange anymore and use only Voice messaging by phone ? Thanks

Hi -

No - Unity needs to read each user's mailbox to determine whether or not new voice messages have been left. That is why MWI does not work when Unity is running in UMR mode - Exchange is down. Once Exchange is operational again, the AvMsgStoreMonitor service and AvNotifier services work in concert to resynch MWI. The Set Lamp instruction comes from Unity to CallManager as does the instruction for turning the lamp off.

So as we said many times, Unity has to have a message store. UMR mode is just a temp thing when the message store is unavailable.

As Ginger mentioned you could consider Unity Connection 2,0 where there is no exchange or domino message store.

Unity has to have a message store, even Unity connection, it has its own and not exchange or domino.

UMR is just not a good long term option and for sure will not be supported by TAC.

I guess it would be possible if you wanted to be in UMR state all the time, like you are now. Unity has to have a message store to store the messages. UMR is technically only if the message store is unavailable.

Thank you for your reply.

Our problem is that in this mode (UMR), we do not have possiblity to see when somebody left us a message and we cannot manage our messages (ex: to remove a message?)

Hi -

You are using the Cisco UMR conversation, which runs when Unity's Exchange server is down. This is not the normal subscriber conversation and is not meant to remain operational long-term. You are not running a supported configuration. If you run Unity in a voicemail only configuration, you have several options:

- Install Unity Connection 2.0, which runs on a Linux platform and has its own message store database. Does not use Exchange. That is the only option I know of.

- Reinstall Unity with Exchange onbox. You will need to create new vm-xxxxx accounts for voicemail. You did not mention whether you are running Exchange onbox already or running a unified messaging configuration. Are you using voice cards in the server or integrated just with CallManager? This information determines the OS that can be run on your Unity server (Win 2000 or Win 2003) and whether or not you can use Exchange 2007 server. I believe Exchange 2007 is unified messaging integration ONLY.

Your best bet might be to install an Exchange 2000 server in the domain and partner Unity with that (rerun Message Store Configuration Wizard). You will still need to create new vm-xxxxx accounts for voicemail as your user's email accounts are on Exchange 2007. I recommend you contact TAC for the best solution.

Thanks for your reply.

Our configuration is as follows:

We have Unity 3.1(6) on a Windows 2000 server, one Call Manager 3.1(4) on another Windows 2000 server and one Exchange 2007 on another Windows 2003 server.

Before we had the same configuration but the server Exchange was an Exchange 2000 server on a different Windows 2000 server.

If I understood, there is no possibility to configure our current Unity Server to have its own Message Store without using Exchange as Message Store?

Hi -

You are correct, your current Unity server needs Exchange, as that is your messaging environment. Even if you were to rebuild Unity with Exchange 2000 onbox, you would still need to create new voicemail-only accounts on this information store for voice messages. If your users want unified messaging, you will either have to move the voicemail enabled mailboxes now on Exchange 2007 back to an Exchange 2003 server (maybe 2000), or upgrade Unity to 5.0(1), which I believe requires an interim upgrade to 4.2.

Thank you.

Another question in connection with this subject :

In our current situation, have we the possibility to make function the MWI (Message Wailing Indicator on the phones 7940) without the connection with Exchange server?
