I am trying to unistall my current installation of the Cisco VPN Client so i can install a newer version but everytime i try i get the following error:

Error 28000: Before installing the Cisco Systems VPN Client you must uninstall the previous version of Cisco Systems VPN Client, using the Add/Remove Program Files option in the Control Panel. Then restart your system.

This is in Windows Vista Business

Anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Why not use the VPN clients own uninstaller? (Via START/Programs/Cisco/uninstall).

However: uninstalling appears to ignore the "old" user data: I uninstalled several times as well by diverse methods, but the new version still new who I was and what I wanted. Not a very clean uninstall, that is. Perhaps a registry cleaner will help, running it after uninstalling?
