Does anyone know if it is possible to set the 'station-role' on an 871W to anything other than Root?
I'd really like to use one of these as the far end of a workgroup bridge.

No, it's not possible. But, if you can use a wireless devices that supports "client mode", you can almost emulate a multipoint bridge.
