IGMP Host version ?

Answered Question
Sep 3rd, 2007

On a VLAN I enable IGMP version 3:

interface VLAN20

...

ip igmp version 3

...

with "show ip igmp interface" I see:

Internet address is 10.88.10.254/24

IGMP is enabled on interface

Current IGMP host version is 2

Current IGMP router version is 3

Questions:

1) What does "Current IGMP host version is 2" mean ? Is t configurable the same as the router version ?

2) Can I have hosts that uses IGMPv2 and IGMPv3 on the same LAN ?

1) AFAIK, No.This means the hosts can be either v2 or v3.

2) Yes.Both v2 and v3 hosts can coexist. But you should implement one of the transition solutions like URD, v3lite or SSM mapping so that v2 reports are interpreted correctly.

Hi,

Do you have any hosts connected to that interface, and yes IGMPv1, 2 and 3 are compatible but only in the router/host relationship, meaning that IGMPv1, IGMPv2 and IGMPv3 routers can't coexist on the same LAN, but a version 2 router can have a version 1 client.

Thanks Mohammed,

you answered to question 2.

Yes we have host connected.

What about question 1 ?

1) What does "Current IGMP host version is 2" mean ? Is t configurable the same as the router version ?

Does it learn the information form the host connected ?

Hi,

The answer to your first question, is yes it seems that the connected host runs v2, and its something configurable on the host itself.

Mohammed Mahmoud.

Hi guy,
The igmp ver3 can be compatibe with igmp ver2.
The most difference between ver2 and ver3 is when ver3 receive igmp report, it require both multicast channel address and exact rp/source address while ver2 do not check rp/ source address.
So when igmp ver3 devices receive ver2 igmp report, we need one method to transit to ver3 such as ssm-mapping,...
