According to Ciscoview's user guide the following user profiles (help desk, approver, network operator) have read only access, but on my system only approver works, the other profiles give me a "failed to open device" error.
The other "powerful" profiles work fine.

This sounds like CSCsg26840. What version of CiscoView do you have?

This is almost definitely the bug CSCsg26840. A patch is available by calling the TAC.
