What router would you recommend for the following setup/change

1 existing network that must be split into 4 new subnets

Routers must be configured with static routes with 1 smart router (5 routers in total)

Uplink: 1Gig fibre optic cable with LX connectors

Downlink: 1 Gig fibre optic with LX connectors

I was thinking of the 2851 with 2 x Gigabit Ethernet SFP, LC connector, LX/LH transceiver (Model GLC-LH-SM) per router. Will it work?

The 2851 is a fine box, but its features and performance are more oriented toward a WAN edge. If you really want to push and sustain gig speeds, and your doing just LAN routing, you might want to consider the 3560 series.

It's not clear why you need a total of 5 routers, and one "smart" router. Perhaps you only need one hub router (with 4 SFP gig ports) and with four downstream switches (e.g. Catalyst Express 500s or 2960s)? Each downstream switch could be a separate subnet.

If you do use something like a 3560, and only need to use static unicast routes, the base image should suffice.
