If you have access to the necessary IOS images then there is a free simulator which is very good. It runs OK under windows, but performance is better under Linux on the same hardware.

Dynamips is the simulator

And there is a front end which makes configuration easier

Mr. Hodge,

Is it possible to use IOS images other than the 7200 IOS image for dynamips?

Yes my friend, you can use the 3620, 3640 and 3660; 2691, 3725, 3745, 7204 (NPE-100 to NPE-400) and 7206VXR with NPE-200. It is a useful tool, that provides real resources and helps a lot to a certification training.

Look into Dynagen(, it makes managing and configuring Dynamips a breeze. They have a tutorial that explains how to use other devices/IOS's other than just the 7200. It's basically just changing the model statement, and updating the IOS path.

I have used both Dynagen and TheBryantAdvantage. Dynagen is great place to start, assuming you have in your mind some exercises to try and/or a book to guide you. BUT you do have to own a router under maintenance in order to get an image to work with.

The benefit to BA is that you get his materials plus 3 days of lab time. His labs are awesome, they give you lots of detail. I found I could complete them in about 1 day, review them another day then still have 1 day lab time to try stuff that I found confusing during various reading sessions.

Good luck!
