Vista Buisness VPN Error: 442

All-

I have seen a number of posts and searched a number of sites looking for a solution for the 442 error.

I am using Version 4.8.01.0590 as this is the only supported (and downloadable) version by my network admins.

At least 90% of the time, I type in my password and I receive the following:

Error 442: Failed to enable virtual device.

What can be done about this?

There are numerous things that you can do to try to solve the problem. There is, for as far as i know, no real solution.

You can try one (or more) of the following things:

- Multiple NICs enabled:

Disable all NICs you do not have in use. If you have a wireless-NIC and a ethernet-NIC, and you're only using the wireles; disable the ethernet-NIC.

- Manually enable the VPN Adapter:

Manually enable the VPN-Adapter in 'Network Connections'

- Reboot!

Reboot your laptop

- Fix the VPN Adapter

Open Network and Sharing Center

Open Network Connection Manager

Enable the virtual adapter (Cisco VPN Adapter)

Right-click on it and select Diagnose

Select Fix

- Run the following from 'cmd':

reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters /v ArpRetryCount /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Reboot after this

I hope that one of these will solve your problem, but sometimes it's just a matter luck.

Thanks, I am aware of these steps.

Is this a Cisco bug? or a Vista bug?

Even with the "random" fix methods, this is a major inconvenience.

This is actually a Cisco bug, it's solved in newer versions of the VPN Client.

The problem with your VPN Client is that version 4.8.01.0590 is a Beta version for Windows Vista, and as we all know; Beta's have bugs!

I think it's advisable for your network administrators that they start supporting more stable versions of the VPN Client!
