CCNA home lab

Unanswered Question

I am planning on studying for the for the CCNA certification. What type of equipment do you recommend that I get from ebay to set up a home lab? I saw a lot of CCNA "kits" for sale. Some have one router while others have multiple routers and switches.

I have this problem too.

You need 3 routers with serial interfaces and one with two. 2500 model will do if you are on a budget but they will not run the 12.4 IOS. You will also need one 2950 switch for VLANs.

If you prefer to rent use a live rack and rent space for about $1 per hour. www.mindtechcom.com which has everything you need.

You will of course need the serial and ethernet cables.

Hope it helps.

i'm also assembling a lab.

i see that the new training materials for the new ccna exams don't mention the catalyst 1900 as the prior ones did.

(i have a 1912, but it was cheap and i don't mind learning what i might find on the job anyway)

also, the materials refer to the 2960. i see that it's more expensive than the 2950, which is also more available used, so the question is which one should i look for.

Not sure if you manage to setup your home lab. If so, pls share with me what are the items required ?? Do let me know your network diagram too. Appreciate your feedback.

well so far, i have a 1900, 2x 2950, a 2501 and i'm learning stuff that there's absolutely no way i would learn from a sim.

no diagram yet for me, i'm only getting into the basic configs and wiping and setting passwords and vlan 1 ip's....anyone else?

I bought a "kit" which came w/ 3x2501 routers running 12.2 IOS. These have 2 serial interfaces and a single 10Mb ethernet. Because no 100Mb FastEthernet I can't do a VLAN trunk. Wished I had one router which I could set up as "router on a stick".

The kit also came with a Catalyst 1900 switch. I think this is useless for current CCNA so I went out and bought a 2950 switch.

I've spent hours and hours configuring the equipment, doing show command and the like.

I have less than $1,000 invested in everything.
