VLAN IP's not pinging

All,

I added a VLAN 301 to my LAN that already has VLANS 300 and 246. On Switch 1, VLAN 301 has an interface IP of 10.220.1.1, on Switch 2, VLAN 301 has an interface IP of 10.220.1.2. HOWEVER, I can not ping either interface from each device even though they are connected via a trunk. Switch 1 has routing enabled, switch 2 does not, but that does not prevent them from pinging each other. VLAN 301 currently has not end devices running on that VLAN.

How can I get the VLANS to ping and recongnized each other?

Much appreciated.

First, make sure the switches is layer 3 switch, layer 2 switch only has one active IP on it.

Try #show ip inter bri

shows the IP status, make sure the vlan and IP are up.

#try #show arp

to check if you get the arp reply from peers IP.

Show ip int brief: Shows each VLAN interface as being up on each switch

show arp: Only shows the local VLAN interface IP Address

any other ideas?

Hi

Does the switch that has ip routing turned off have any other L3 vlan interfaces other than vlan 301.

Could you send config of both switches ?

Hi

Your layer 2 switch has a default-gateway of 10.246.1.2 which is part of vlan 246.

Can you post "sh ip ro" output from both switches.

Can you ping vlan 300 interface on L3 switch ( 10.3.240.240 ) from the L2 switch ?

Yes, I can ping the VLAN300 IP from the L3 to the L2 Switch. VLAN 246 and 300 I can ping both ways.

Hi

As far as i can see on all your trunk links on the L3 switch you have not allowed vlan 301. Presumably one of these trunk links connects to the L2 switch ?

Edit - not all trunk links actually but some have a list of allowed vlans. Can you check that the trunk to teh L2 switch is not one of these ?

the G1/0/1 interfaces are the ports that is the turnk between the two switches. I just no initiated switchport trunk vlan allow ALL, on both g1/0/1, but still can not ping the 301 interface.

found something interesting:

I created a new vlan on L3, vlan 302, ip address 10.225.1.1, after that, I could ping the 302 interface from the L2 switch. Then I created a VLAN interface on the L2 switch, VLAN 302, Ip address 10.225.1.2, after that I could not ping the L3 VLAN 302 interface? Both switches are VTP servers in the same domain.

Found something else, both Switches are VTP Servers. Once is CAPITALIZED, the other is in lower case. Are the VTP domains names case sensitive? If so, then if I create a VLAN 302 on L2 Switch and VLAN 302 on L3 switch does it conflict?
