available subnets

Unanswered Question
Sep 28th, 2007

I am confused by some of my study material. When calculating subnets I was taught it is minus 2 unless subnet zero is used and then minus 1 but the exam questions I am using seem to arbitrarily either use all subnets or subtract two - for exam purposes what should I assume the correct number to be?

I have this problem too.

Always assume that subnet zero is not being used unless it explicitly that it is.

subnet zero is enabled by default on most routers these days so i would say to assume that it is always being used unless stated that it is not....

Luca is right, now days all the IOS's seem to use subnet zero by default which is just the first subnet in your subnetted addresses. I would assume you use subnet zero unless the question specifically states otherwise.
