Dear Sir,

If we want to replace the existing 6506(HSRP/OSPF) and 3660(OSPF and BGP) together. Can we get a 6506E to replace both of them in one go?

Thanks.

Hi Joseph,

So you want to replace both with one 6506E or 2 6506E replacing 6506 and 3660?

All your 6506 line cards will fit in 6506E and ready to use but 3660 is a router which can be replaced with 6506E but you have to get sup engines and line cards for this and have to reconfigure all what you have configure on your 3660 router on 6506E switch.

Do arrange good amount of downtime before moving ahead with your plans.

Hi Ankur,

Actually, the existing environment is:

1. 2 x 6506

2. 2 x 3660

Or 2 x (6506+3660)

Now they want to replace 1 x 6506 and 1 x 3660. I am planing to get a new 6506E with routing module so that the network becomes:

1. 1 x 6506 (old)

2. 1 x 3660 (old)

3. 1 x 6506E (new)

The 6506 and 6506E will be a pair of core switch.

Do you think the plan is good?

Thanks.

Hi Joseph,

It all depends what you were running earlier and what are you planning now. As per your current scenario after replacement you will be having 3 network devices in your network which includes 2 6k boxes and only 1 3660 router.

Before replacement you are having 4 network devices 2 6k box and 2 3660 router which means you are eliminating 1 3660 alltogether so it depends for what purpose you were using 3660 which you are replacing.

You can have 6506 and 6506E as pair of core switch with redundancy and load sharing with routing protocols configured but then for what purpose you were using pair of 3660 router. So may be we need to understand more on what role your 3660 routers were playing and what exactly you need now in your network.
