Hello All,
i have some query about EARL.
- as it says it is central processing engine, is it software in to cisco switch or hardware.?
- can we say EARL is the engine who manages CAM TABLE.? as it says it stores mac relationship.
- is EARL for all the family of Cisco switch.?
Thanks,

Hi Dhaval,
EARL is an ASIC on CAT5k and CAT6k only. Other switches use different ASIC for same purpose. No cisco switches use IOS to perform this job.

Hi Dhaval,
EARL stands for Encoded Adress Resolution Logic - in other words it is the one of the main hardware components (chipsets) of a Supervisor Engine.
It was found in CAT5k boxes and now also on CAT6k Boxes.
You can have a look at this link
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/76.html
Essentially, it's the same for the Cat6k. Earl and Cafe listen and learn MAC addresses, control address aging and determine where to send frames.

Hi,
thanks for the information.
one more thing,
as EARL is the chipset for address learning and forwarding decision only on 5K and 6K cisco switch.
is the switch other than 5K and 6K uses IOS itself for such a process.?
Thanks,
