Let's see the show version from the switch before answering that question.

3550 do support L3 routing with the EMI image loaded but it sounds like you have the 3500XL which is Layer2.

Hi King,

3500XL is a pure layer 2 switch which does not support routing at all. It does support one layer 3 vlan interface where you can specify an ip address for management purpose.

On the other hand 3550 with SMI image does support routing but not all davance routing protocols like EIGRP,OSPF etc. It only support intervlan routing and RIP and 3550 EMI does suppor tall advance routing protocols.
