It depends somewhat on how your router (or switch) is configured. But in general the IOS does not have a problem with 192.168.x.x/16 or with 172.x.x.x/8. These are both examples of what is generally called a supernet. A supernet applies a mask to addresses that is shorter than the "natural" or default mask for a network. supernet is one of the concepts of CIDR (Classless InterDomain Routing).
The specification and use of Class A, Class B, and Class C addresses is an older way of organizing and managing IP addresses. CIDR is a newer way or organizing and managing IP addresses and it is one component of classless routing, which is the newer and more sophisticated approach to IP routing.
