looking to updgrade the existing Unified Messaging Unity server running in W2K, to Windows 2003 and Unity 5.x on new hardware.

Is the best approach to:

After DBWalker & DiRT backup

1. install 2003 windows image (from disc that came with Unity 5 kit)

on new hardware and then install Unity 4.0(5)

restore backup and test. Then upgrade Unity 4.0(5) to Unity 5.x

or

2. upgrade existing Unity 4.0(5) to Unity 5, then backup. Install 2003 image on new server and then install Unity 5 and restore backup.

thx for your thoughts

Hi -

Here is why I would favor Option 1:

- You get to test Unity on the new server and validate its functionality without impacting your existing customer base. You can use a demo license. Configure two phones and subscribers and test. One caveat is that you would need to delete the subscribers prior to performing your DiRT Restore.

- License files - with option 2 you have to get the upgrade license for one server and then have Cisco Licensing reissue it for the new server MAC. Using Option 1, you only need to get the upgrade license file for the new server.

In case you don't have it already, here is a link to the Unity 5.x reconfiguration guide that discusses upgrading from version 4 - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/5x/upgrade/guide/ex/5xcuruge020.html
