All,
I have a question about which IOS and CatOS allow for the device/chassis serial numbers to be displayed when specific "show" commands are executed. I think I read or heard that some of the newer IOS versions will be programmed to include info such as the chassis serial number. I think older versions of IOS had to have the "snmp-server chassis-id <serial #>" configured in order to display the chassis serial #.
Does anybody have any info for this?
Thanks in advance.

Use the commands show sprom chassis for the Catos and show idprom for IOS.

Some of the new routers (especially the new ISR routers) support a command of show inventory. The output of this command does have the chassis serial number. Be aware that just because an IOS router returns data in response to the command does not guarantee that it returns the correct data. I just tried this command on a 7206 router and got response data but the data given is not the correct chassis serial number.

Most catos versions above 5.X will show the chassis serial number with the show version command. Most newer ios show this under the show idprom command . This page will help
