LWAP Upgrades

When a WLC is updated causing the APs to upgrade how is this upgrade achieved?

In particular, how does the AP communicate with the WLC, does it use TFTP if so does it communicate directly of through the LWAPP tunnel?

I have a customer that is concerned about the update process, and wants to now if it is theoreticaly possible to upload a crafted version of the software.

1.) All communication between WLC and AP is achieved through the LWAPP tunnel. This includes the AP software upgrade.

2.) It is not possible (beyond the extent that anything's possible) to doctor the software, because of the certificate validation. All transmissions between controller and access point start with at two-way authentication, validating the X.509 certificates.
