Possible Networking Bottleneck

We very intermittently see where devices on the network seem to be starved for network bandwidth. We're looking for a fairly inexpensive piece of equipment that we can attach to the switch at several retail locations that will capture a couple hours worth of IP packets for troubleshooting. Any suggestions other than a sniffer (the one we have doesn't keep enough history based on the IP traffic volume) - Thanks

Yes it will. The cool thing about them too is you could leave it in place and throttle the application down to use, lets say 25% of the bandwidth, and that's all they get. I think they are pricey, but you might be able to work with a vendor/reseller and they can do a network assesment for you (that way you don't have to buy the box).

Not sure on the price, but a packeteer (www.packeteer.com) would you show you. You would not see the actual packets, but I assume you're looking for top talkers, top protocols, etc. Depending on your equipment, you could use Netflow too.

HTH and please rate.

Thank you for the reply. I am not a networking specialist (more specialized in software development) but would a packeteer give me enough information to determine which device/application is flooding the network - if that is actually our problem? Thanks again!

Great - appreciate the input.
