API for Cisco routers

how can we make a software application talk to cisco routers. Is there any API using which the same can be achieved.

There is an API but for XR series IOS .

We need to communicate with Cisco 2811 routers using an application.

Any tips on this would eb extremely useful

I'm not sure what exacly you want to achive but it sounds like SNMP could be a solution?

Thanks for the update Rolf but we have already considered using SNMP.

As far as your query is concerned we are trying to create a software application that can configure routers.

Depending on what you want to do, you could use something like CiscoWorks LMS for configurations (netconfig, config editor)
