Here is a document that goes over the clustering.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/61.html

It explains the use of CDP and clustering. Using Cisco Discovery Protocol Version 2 (CDPV2), all

switches, including the command switch, discover their CDP neighbors and store this information in

their respective CDP neighbor cache. Switches running cluster capable software pass the information

about themselves and their respective neighbors to the command switch, using the Intra Cluster

Communication (ICC) mechanism, which runs on top of User Datagram Protocol (UDP). The command switch

filters the information and creates a list of candidate switches.
