I was once told that the speed had to be set to 100Mbs on the Failover link when using LAN based failover on a Gig switchport.

Hi
I am not aware of any such restriction and the recommendation from Cisco is to use an interface that is running at the same speed as your data interfaces for failover. Are you proposing to use stateful failover ?

I am running Active/Passive on my ASAs right now, this is the only configuration that I needed on my primary unit for the FO interface, I never had to set the interface link speed.
interface GigabitEthernet0/3
description LAN/STATE Failover Interface
failover
failover lan unit primary
failover lan interface FOLink GigabitEthernet0/3
failover replication http
failover link FOLink GigabitEthernet0/3
failover interface ip FOLink 192.168.100.1 255.255.255.0 standby 192.168.100.2
