3750 switch for intervaln routing

Hi,

We are proposing a layer 3 , 24 gig 3750 switch to the customer with support for basic routing protocol.

PPT is attached describing the basic setup.

Just required to vladidate few things,

1. The 3745 router would be acting as a DHCP server, would there be any problem for the router to assign IP's to differnt VLANS.

2.The router is using OSPF as its routing protocol as number of other wan sites are also connected to it. However the switch does not support OSPF, can the switch be able to advertise its vlan networks using static routing?

Thanks in advance

Puneet.

1: this will not be a problem. just configure a pool for each subnet that needs dhcp. do not forget the ip helper adresses on the vlan interfaces.

2: this would require static routes on the 3745 which is perfectly possible. using a switch with enhanced image would allow you to run OSPF on the switch as well. this would certainly be my preferred solution when the vlans on the switch are subject to regular modifications.

regards,

Leo

Its very much achievable without any hiccups.

Another option is upgrading IOS to run OSPF between s/w & router.

I believe RIP is available on the standard image, correct? If so, why not just run rip between the L3 switch and the router, then redistribute to OSPF.

If you get a 3750 with the IPSERVICES image then it does support OSPF , EIGRP ,BGP etc.... and this would eliminate your problem , yes it does cost more . Yes you could use statics but that makes it messy or more difficult to troubleshoot if you have problems. Your best bet is to invest a little more in the 3750 and get the image that supports ospf , it will make your life easier.
