6500 vs 4500

Does anyone have any guidelines on how to determine when to use a 6500 vs a 4500 series switch?

Assume a simple network topology consisting of a core switch (6500 or 4500) and many 2950 access switches attached to it with redundant links, multiple VLANs with the core switch providing L3 routing, and 802.1q trunk uplinks passing all VLANs. Also, the servers are on the core switch on a dedicated server VLAN.

Cisco recommends 4500 series for medium size networks and 6500 series for large networks, but I can't find any information of what constitutes medium and large networks, or any switch selection guidelines.

There really are no hard numbers, you'll get as many different answers are there are Networking Professional Connection members.

If you have CCO access, you can try the Cisco Product Advisor or make an appointment with your local Cisco reseller or Cisco Account Manager/SE.
