Unix system VLAN frame tagging?

I realize this isn't a Unix-related forum, but I suspect only networking professionals will understand my quandary...

A number of Unix variants (all *BSD's & Linux...) all offer 802.1Q frame tagging through the vlan(4) command.

Was the motivation for these Unix camps to implement their own frame tagging due to bridges at the time not being able to assign VLAN's to frame traffic?

Any insight which can be shared would be appreciated.

Remember the core of the popular VMware products is also a linux system. You certainly want vlan support in a virtual environment. In my opinion, they are simply following the trends & standards development in networking. It is quite normal to expect VLAN support on Unix boxes.
