Anyone know if the ability to program the controller to become a part of an AD domain so it can use LDAP?

not sure about that, but you can use radius.
I have not tried radius against IAS (microsoft radius), but I do know that IAS works fine with our Cisco PIX vpn setup. Delete or disable a user in AD, and IAS behaves accordingly.
